Ah yes, the periodic Christian whining about "why are you guys just picking on us?"
Because you guys are the biggest threat in our local area. We also have things to say about Islam and Scientology but you guys are the ones who are in the local news all the time.
Do you seriously think the new "militant atheism" came out of nowhere or for no reason? It was a direct reaction to the evangelicals flexing their political muscle during the W Bush administration. It's a simple Newtonian principle at work here. The more fundamentalists act like bullies, the more atheists will be vocal against their sponsoring religion.
The Evil Christian Empire does more than just try to stop people with similar body parts from getting married or otherwise persecute people inclined to love those with similar body parts. The Freethinker Rebel Alliance has many more grievances than that.
You interfere with the teaching of science in the classrooms. You try to stop scientific research because of your metaphysical objections (stem cells). You try to use our tax dollars and public facilities to promote your religion whenever you can get away with it. You subjugate women and meddle in their life choices because of your faith-based beliefs that zygotes and embryos have souls. You terrorize children with fictional places like Hell. You insult us and say we can be "patriots" (HW Bush). And your past is more than a little scary. While it is true that burnings at the stake are a thing of the past (which was done by Protestants and Catholics alike), it is not because Christianity has changed as much as it has been restrained by modernity and civilization.
If you would stop doing all these things and keep your religion to yourselves, we could all get along.
Yes, Islama-the-Hutt is also scary. In some ways, Islam is Christianity on steroids. Or perhaps just Christianity without the restraints of civilization.
