Our species has always displayed this level of barbarity to some degree. It is an unfortunate part of our evolution.
The Dark ages, Genghis Khan, Caligula, Nazi Germany. Even in the orient if you look at the history of conflict between China and Japan, in their past centuries, the captured in war and even women were abused on both sides.
Humans really need to stop putting labels of race, blood, nationality, religion and political ideology as a priority. This sicko who did this truly believes he is justified. It is a result of human's flawed perceptions and is the source of human suffering.
