It's called "Great Britain" because it's the largest island of the British isles. It is the greatest land mass and so it's called "Great" Britain. Got nothing to do with greatness old boy. We lost that a good while ago.
The island's history dates back many thousands of years, the country many hundreds. The island's cultured history dates back many thousands of years. Long long long before the Roman Empire.
