We actually had two empires. The first was based on peace and trade, which made the country extremely rich. The vast amount of wealth soon turned into corruption and power which lead to the second empire, the empire of conquest and sheer military power. The empire reached it's peek on 1922, after that date it started to die. The empire had it's last breath on 1991. When it gave back Hong Kong.
If you look at all the members of the commonwealth of nations. You'll see that all the nations that are part of it were once territories held by the British Empire. Which is why some say the Empire isn't really dead.
