Judging by the camera work in the second video what is crystal clear is that what they did wrong was make their statue the tallest object in the area. Probably a good idea from a marketing point of view but you never want to be the highest target in an area which is prone to thunderstorms.

Wonder why 'god' didn't tell them that? Don't fuck with Mother Nature.
