Because it's a part of the vernacular you grew up with, and still functions as an expletive within that cultural context? Language is about conveying a message to other people, which swearing at or to a particular deity does. It's not about expressing literal belief in every word you utter. Haven't you ever heard of figurative language?

Sorry Esq. but to me life is all about learning and the rest has got very little value.
To engage in things that have no value often lead to downfall so cultural or not cultural make no difference.
There is an old saying that goes......YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT.
By the same token i would say.......YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK.
So if you think about something with no value you also are a person with no value.
