Well, that is what evolution means; change in allele frequency over generations. As I pointed out, that's what's in the textbooks, the university sources, and the generalized ones. It's not a poor word choice; if we were discussing anything else we wouldn't be discussing evolution at all.

How so? I know they found some in earlier fossil strata which indicates that its evolution happened earlier than anticipated, but they were still able to predict where it would be, and nobody was asserting that they would be finding the first iteration of the form. Just that if they went to a given strata, they'd find a given animal, which they did.
