The main issue as I see it is that supply in all things is finite but demand is unlimited (theoretically). So we need to even the curves.

Hmm, no I don't think so. There is no resource that could satisfy infinite demand.
Water, for example, is finite. There's billions of people out there suffering from water deprivation right now. Even in the US, the world's richest economy, water reserves in many states are falling year on year. But then consider that demand for water is rising day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute. Simple logic implies that as supply decreases against a demand that is held constant (or indeed increases) something has to give.
