I'm not sure how true the Metallica bit is here. Hammett studied with Satriani. Satriani studied with jazz musicians. Ulrich took up drums a few years after a famed trip to a Deep Purple concert. He came to the U.S. as a teen to pursue tennis. Hetfield is known to have taken piano lessons as a kid and his mother was some sort of singer, but I've never heard of him being classically trained. It's known that Cliff Burton was influenced by classical music as a kid, but I don't think he was classically trained.
Well ok, that was my understanding. I am guilty of flawed perceptions as well. But still, those are very deep backgrounds regardless. Jazz is the most difficult to play. And nobody regardless of type of music gets to that level without a mix of influences.
Well even if Burton was influenced by classical, it still shows in Metallica's music. Extremely dramatic. Ups and downs just like Beethoven. That false memory on my part might stem from their S&M album. But the classical influence even without the training is obvious.
