Tips kept me alive.

I bet they did. You yanks always give at least 10% tips, or at least, that's been my experience with them. Unfortunately over here in the UK, people aren't that generous.

15% is standard. I tip 20% standard, and 25% or more for excellent service. I do like the idea of restaurants starting to pay their employees better and forbid tipping. It's a small movement, but I think it's gaining some ground.
