It probably sucks to have such an incompetent teacher.
The real issue with overly religious people is that they are really clueless about the things they oppose and don't want to learn about them. And what is even worse that due to the nature of certain types of religion they are purposedly indoctrinated to be argessively ignorant and abandon reason (which is truly religion's worst enemy). That's the first and the foremost part of the problem. Out of that follows their view on science as on an opposing faith or heresy. Due to their ignorance they know no better and on the one hand, view anything not in line with their dogma as heresy and on the other hand, don't even try to do any actual, conscious research. I.E. they willfuly block themselves of any knowledge that contradicts their dogma in a slightest way.
The only case when a fundamentalists do a 'research' on a topic they view as heresy is when they try to find 'descrepancies' and 'facts' that they think will help them to debunk a theory or a fact they don't like. Sometimes (pretty rare) they even manage to go as far as to get some understanding of the topic. But at any rate they don't do any good due to their pre-set psychological barrier that prevents them from being 'indoctrinated' by what they try to debunk. However in most cases one can't speak of any understanding on their side due to sheer incompetence, ignorance and hostile approach (amongst other thing that prevent them from getting into the subject is their negative attitude - you aren't really going to do good at a topic that you hate and to add to it - hate it religiously).
To sum it up, fundamentalists are never going to debunk Theory of Evolution and almost surely are never going to even find real discrepancies in it (which would have been a good thing if someone really managed to do so because it's one of the things that help advance the science) because they: a) don't understand what is fundamental science and what are it's purposes at all, b) they are willfuly and aggresively ignorant and have a wrong attitude towards studying, c) they are plain incompetent (which in itself is correctable but not when point b) is present).
It's pretty obvious why radical believers hate Theory of Evoluton and sometimes Biology in general, but it's really interesting that logically they have to hate Physics first (and not Cosmology, but Theoretical Physics in general). As all in all the laws of Physics govern Biological processes too, even though there's not enaugh knowledge to make a consistent model that turns Biology into an applied branch of Physics. Also it's rather interesting how fundamentalists seem not to attack Math at all.
