It makes much more sense that because they did not have the benefit of knowing the scientific reason you cook pork, that everything good or bad in life was either a reward from a god or a punishment from a god. That idea was in polytheism long before modern monotheism. Humans back then had no modern knowledge of science so they gap filled.
Even the idea of Karma, not the way the west has watered it down, but some sects of Africa and Asia believe that birth defects are a punishment from something you did in a prior life.
Even today because of religious superstition, many of the reasons Ebola spreads is because of the bad handling during their religious burial rituals.
