I have been in past life regression. I have also been in future life progression. Both under hypnosis. I studied hypnotherapy a few years back, this is one of its more esoteric and controversial areas.
What it is is a fantasy created by the "subconscious", a form of dreamwork wherein personal current issues and concerns are projected onto a fantasy alter-ego. It is tremendously liberating as an experience to stand outside oneself (the original Greek meaning of 'ecstasy', ekstasis) into a temporary alternate ego. I find it reasonably straightforward to separate out and reject the woo when exploring such phenomena firsthand.
I've used similar experiences of hypnotic dreamwork (which is what past life regression really us) to inform my writing.
Just to give a critical insider's experience on this phenomenon.
