It's the virign birth that has been attached later on. Just as the latin word anus can mean crone or asshole, the hebrew word almah also has different meanings.

So, originally Joseph and Mary probably did have some rough sex in the desert resulting in Jesus.

But we're trying to explain bullshit with bullshit here anyway.
