It's pointless to argue what "arab" is. The point is there is demographic group that identifies itself as arab, and it's members are disproportionally likely to be believe they've been dealt a shitty hand by modernity, rather than they missed the boat to modernity.
They think modernity didn't offer much that should really be important, while everyone who really embraced modernity is out to deprive them the status in the world that they think should come as a result of having some of what they think ought to be Important.
They seem broken because that mentality causes them to rush down what everyone else think is a blind alley.
