Given your avatar I should expect a reference to the crusades. Fair enough.

When I started using it, I was thinking of the more idealistic version of knights. The fact that knights were not always champions of valor and justice has been pointed out to me before.

As it happens it wasn't my intent to point anything out. Just an observation is all. I too used to have a more idealistic view of "Christian Knights". To the point that I have a Maltese Cross tattooed on my right shoulder. We live and learn I suppose.

Maybe a little? Honestly never gave it that much thought. "Knowledge is power" is more or less my religious point of view. (Atheist...) The backwards Latin is basically an attempt to be facetious at Christianity's expense. It was a toss between that and "Evangelical Atheist".
