God's go-to response for most things tends to involve anything from mass genocide to mass genocide for literally any reason and a lot of it is our fault for being who and what we are.
When the Israelites were around, back in the not so good old days, there wars a lot of funny religious practices, such as, sacrificing your first born son to Molech. 'Holy' orgies (If thats even possible) and here comes the fun part mutilating ones genitals. These practices and religions were all very appealing to the Jews and were more pagan than Jewish, if you look at the history. I believe, if it was God, showed Himself as being a jealous God who hated worship of other gods, because He didnt want the jews to be morally deprived. God was dealing with stupid people, He couldnt show His love and true nature, as He was dealing with people who couldnt deal with such a God.
If god didn't want us to act a certain way, he should have built us that way.

Yes I have read my Bible.
The story of Jericho is fascinating, isnt it? An entire city/town falling because people they yelled and then they killed everyone except the people found in Rahabs house. I find this story morally distasteful, I dont worship a god like that.
So I think the main two theories one should either stick too would be:
These stories are over-exsaggerated and God did not help them in any of their bloody conquests
OR
God was working with primitive people who couldnt understand many ideas and beliefs we take for granted (for example the idea of individualism) Therefore, God patiently worked with His people, so He could over centuries and even millenniums understand what God really is. The people in that land were exceptionally evil, to my knowledge they found a breeding ground in Jericho where babies were born and then they were sacrificed. Horrible, horrible place! Was God justified in exterminating them (well helping in their extermination) yes. Should all of the people and animals be destroyed? No, but thats how the Israelites thought.
Just how Achon sinned and when he was caught, all of his belongings were destroyed (including his family) and also the idea that one can bear the brunt of their parents sin, these ideologies were accepted as the norm, even when Jesus came to the planet, so I think you can see God has a very difficult time ahead of Him, slowly teaching His people. This idea is classified as progressive theology.
