There is no single explanation of hell in scripture, and what the OT and NT describe of the afterlife are different enough to create many different options. I have no doubt that you can provide an alternative version that works for you, just as I had one that worked for me when I was a JW. Depending on how literally you take the verses (or conversely, how metaphorically) hell can be anything from a simple grave (meaning nothing happens after death) or a fiery pit where you suffer torments forever, or the more common 'condition of being left out in the cold' that seems more popular today.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
