Helicopter parenting is not a good method. The best you'll get out of it is that your son, as soon as he is capable of minimal independence will leave the house without hesitating. Just an advice, from a well behaved 20 year old man with a lovely mother that was never too paranoid about my activities. I'd go one step further and say that my mother's permissive policy allowed me to grow as an individual; so yeah, your methodology doesn't have my approval.
