He was in not in hell; he was probably in sheol or hades. Nobody goes to hell until after the final judgement when Jesus returns, when they are thrown into the "lake of fire". Jesus definitely spoke of the existence of hell and how bad it will be. If annihilation occurs, it is after time spent in hell.

We all know that Jesus is our savior, but you're right that we don't know for sure if our interpretation of biblical doctrine is correct or not. We believe that we humans evolved, but scientists don't all agree with each other about the specifics.
