My dad in his younger years, was not too far from Archie as far as the racism, mixing up words, attitudes toward women and gays, vocal but uninformed on most any issue and so on.
Back then, many "dads" were like Archie. It was not an uncommon mindset, at least in the white bread SoCal Orange County of the 70s.
As a teenager, I once mentioned to my mom I was sweet on this girl. First thing out of her mouth was, "It's not that black girl is it?!?" Since there was only one black girl in the entire school of 1200 students, no mom, the odds are not good. It is safe! She was probably a proper Euro-blonde! Not a Jew either! Whew! Dodged that bullet!
Pissed me off then and still irks to this day, but what are going to do with old people?
Nonetheless, my folks watched All in the Family and quite enjoyed it, but I think the irony escaped them. With a puzzled look on his face, I remember my dad wondering what exactly was *wrong* with what Archie just said? He's usually right after all!
