IMHO, that is why the US never devolved into a Christian version of the Taliban. If it weren't for the fact that Christianity is so fractured, they could have crippled or outright eliminated church-state separation through constitutional amendments. But Madison's words remained persuasive: "Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects?"
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
