I think the truth is that, in the picture, the colors are GOLD and PASTEL BLUE.
Your brain interprets the bright light on the side of the photo to suggest a bigger difference between the two colors than there is, and that either pushes the brighter color up the scale towards white, or the darker color down the scale towards black.
Basically, our brains know it's a picture and are guessing (without our permission) what the colors are IRL, based on how we know bright light affects a photograph.
