Even if the country was "founded on christian values" (which it wasn't), who cares? Things change, things improve. Some people want to keep moving away from the dark ages.

I think it is fair to say we were largely settled by the religious nutters other countries didn't want, though not exclusively. The constitution was particularly far sighted and written by a group of men who were more concerned to keep any one religion from ruling the roost than in establishing a Christian country. Secularism is the foundation stone for having a country where the religious can enjoy worship their way without fear of persecution. But everyone has to buy in and not try to subvert the constitution with laws -such as the anti-gay marriage laws- which seek to coerce everyone to live in a way they think will please their god.
