Looking from a different perspective, the purpose of religion is to establish, support and protect a population of individual humans forming a robust and resilient society. In this view, denial of obvious fact contradicting dogma is an important mechanism to protect the group at the expense of honesty or even coherence for the member.
Not only does it not matter that the dogma is contrary to observation and reason, that is a feature, not a bug, which welds the adherents into a functional, brain-eatin' machine.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat?
