Evolution is a process, and a human abstraction, but that does not undermine its reality. You cannot put evolution in a box and mail it to Cleveland -- does that mean it isn't actual?
It should be noted that language evolves according to geography and usage, and that one can build a cladistic tree of languages just as one can build one for species. That enhances the value of meme as metaphor, once you understand that language consists of memes, oftentimes.
