Even if humanity has a godawful WWIII, civilization will rise again. Will that one learn anything from the first? Idunno, and it doesn't matter. If #2 screws up there will be a #3, ad infinitum.
Each rise gets harder, easy oil will be gone, easy minerals and ores dispersed, environmental degradation will be a problem too, but while humanity is regrouping, nature will take over. Look how verdant and plush the area around Chernobyl is.
Even a 10,000 year climb back to where we are now (and I think even a devastating war might only run the clock back 1000 years) and we're still in the running for winning the galaxy.
