If I believe that something doesn't exist, and you cannot prove it does, then it's not unreasonable to believe that it doesn't exist. If sufficient evidence becomes available to prove its existence, then belief becomes the reasonable approach. This is how we operate in pretty much every other facet of our lives. Only when it comes to the possible existence of god(s) do we abandon the approach that has worked very well for us otherwise.
Most of the gods that people believe in today were very bold and active in the distant past, when the lack of longevity and technology made it nearly impossible to verify such claims, and when the lack of knowledge and understanding made it much more likely that those claims would be accepted at face value. The more we resolved those issues, the further and further into the background the gods faded, until we live in a world where "god" is intangible and utterly undetectable in any possible way save for those which can only be verified on an individual basis and must, like the claims of old, be taken at face value. If we have to revert to that mindset to find god, then that is a very big problem IMO.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
