Your avoiding the question. Is it a physical thing or not?
If you want a mechanical anaology, it's like the memory recorded into the computer as the information streams into it. It's by no means a perfect comparison as our brains are much more complex and very different to how pc's work, but it does the job.
Our thoughts are directly created by electrical impulses going through the brain. They are influenced and shaped by our experiences. The software built into the brain can interpret these thoughts and make them more cohesive, pulling them together along with memory and instinct to form what we call consciousness.
In short, yes. It is a physical thing. We only percieve it as 'something else' because we do not fully understand how the brain works, but we're getting there. Literally NOTHING in the research so far gives even the slightest hint that our mind cannot exist without it and that consciousness is not derived from and is a physical process. If evidence presents itself that it is in fact the case, science will accept it and fundamentally change. But so far that hasn't happened.
