We all are vulnerable at some point in our lives. Religion, for some people, is the crutch they need to get through life. 

The human brain  evolved to find patterns. Perhaps the reason so many people try to find the 'meaning' in life is because they are following their natural instincts to find the patterns in the random events in life. They are, of course,  are wrong about the existence of god but it is understandable why some people would want to believe in a deity.
