A simple online search will tell you that Christians do not all agree on this subject. Nor did any of the sites I looked at use the Genesis verse (38:9) to support their opinion, which is a case of someone having sex, not masturbating. The specific act is coitus interruptus, and in Genesis 38:9, it was done to avoid impregnating his [dead] brother's wife, as he did not want to produce children for his brother. See:

So it really has nothing to do with masturbation, and many Christians are sensible enough to see that. Some were sensible enough to observe the fact that the Bible does not mention masturbation, and so their opinions on the subject involve making inferences from other things that are stated.
