It means what the two parties want it to mean. If they decide it means nothing more to them than a simple legal contract, then that is their choice, yes.
"Sacred" is a red herring. Christians can still stick to just doing what they've always done (since removing polygamy as was the case in the bible). No one is forcing Christians to do anything they don't want to do.
Christians, however, are trying to stop other people doing what they want to do by expecting them to bow to the whims of a belief system they are not involved in.
Please stop trying to come up with reasons why you can belittle gays.
