Go to quran.com and read the same verses there. The message of Islam is clear. And what was the treaty that "unbelievers" broke and that made then deserving of death? The one that says pay a tax, convert, or die? You can read the Qur'an however you please. You've been brought up with the influence of secular values so that's how you are inclined to read it---very generously. Some (including your fellow Muslims) would say incorrectly. A shockingly large number, perhaps even a majority, of Muslims both today and throughout the history of Islam share bigoted views towards gays, apostates, unbelievers, and women, which they codified in text, and it would seem to suggest that how you wish the Qur'an to read is not how it in fact does.
