You have to understand that people in that part of the country view driving as an aggressive race, not merely a means of getting from one place to another.  They use the subway for that.

I assumed that before moving here, but have discovered otherwise. Atlanta has fast aggressive drivers. If you try to go the  speed limit you will get run the fuck over. I'm okay with that; I just drive faster myself.

I see all kinds of stupid on the roads in NYC: turning right from three lanes away, creating non-existent lanes, and the frequent meaningless horn blasts. It still blows my mind that the asshole seven cars back immediately jumps on his horn the split second a light turns green. There are certainly assholes everywhere, but it is rare to see any form of courtesy on the roads here. I don't think it is aggressive as much as everyone is totally self absorbed when behind the wheel.

Some of your confusion on this is because you just don't understand the sport of driving New York style.  But the honking of the horn the instant the light turns green is because it is a race, and someone delaying the start is ruining the time of the drivers behind that person.  If you don't instantly get going when the light changes, how is that fair to the racers behind you?

Also, honking on the horn and yelling obscenities and making obscene gestures are just ways that New Yorkers say "hi" to each other.  It's just a cultural difference that you are not used to.
