That was probably potassium. Magnesium in chunk form is safe to handle. Race cars sometimes have wheel rims made from it.
Magnesium shavings and particles, on the other hand, are EXTREMELY dangerous, especially if already on fire. Nothing will put out the fire, even water will accelerate the combustion once it starts, and the reaction is so violent it releases hydrogen which will explode. Not a fun experience.
