Some belief seems natural and a result of evolutionary variables but if religion stopped influencing public life and leading people to commit horrible despicable actions the world would be a better place to live in. Rest assured, no one really believes the disappearance of religion equals no evil - We are a dangerous species no matter what and we are all prone to irrationality; some truly evil people were atheists - This isn't to say atheism is evil, but that not believing is not a magical ticket to being good and rational. Personally, I would be happy in a world where the virtues of temperance and prudence are valued, as well as critical thinking.
From my experience the division between atheists and theists is not a strong one - At least not amongst my generation (young people) and peer groups, most people don't give a shit about what you believe, they may act surprise if they see you in church and you never told anyone you're a believer, but no one really cares - Just don't kill people or try to do stupid shit.

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
