Realizing you are insignificant in the grand scheme of things does not necessarily lead to nihilism, which some here seem to be suggesting. I think it brings a truer sense of humility and humbleness, (something Christians SAY is a virtue, but few of them actually possess, due to thinking they are all loved by the creator of the universe no less!).
I like what Spooky said, there is a certain beauty to knowing we are insignificant in the universe. The whole Pale Blue Dot thing. But while we are here, we get to experience so much. Do "I" really matter, 14 milllion years from now, or even 1000 years from now? Probably not. Do "I" matter right now? Absolutely, if only a little.
Our insignificance is,kind of ironically, insignificant. It does not matter, really, that we do not matter, except to make us humble (and I think, better people for it).
I matter right this moment, to myself, to my husband, to my kid, to my cats. I will try to make a positive impact while I am here. Humanity may die out someday, so that my ripples die with it, but for all that, I'm glad for the brief existence that I do have.
