There was this sub genre that became very popular in the early 2000s incorporating heavy grooves and even other non metal elements such as DJs, called "Nu Metal". KoRn and Limp Bizkit are rather typical, but Slipknot is also often counted among it. It became as controversial among old school metal fans as it was popular among the younger generation of new fans (the first big wave of which would have been in their early teens towards the turn of the millenium), and has a lot of haters for not being Trve. It is however definitely "Metal" albeit often not strictly "heavy metal" in the sense of classic metal styles.
