Yes, absolutely. My proposal to simply give them a quick friendly crash course with some guidelines concerning culture and behaviour would actually be more equivalent to taking them seriously as human beings. I must say though that I know nothing about this case, and they may very well have been doing that.
And again, that is a great idea. My guess is (and I freely admit it is just a guess) that you are not the only German who has thought of this, and very likely they have done that, just as you suggest may have happened. It is always a good idea to give a bit of an orientation to a group of people from another country, as things are different in different countries and it helps avoid problems to know something about the differences.
Frankly, I would be surprised if there were no orientation given.
