I thought the Amish was a crazy retarded community that existed in times when cars had only 1 horse power and after that they probably have died out.
I grew up in the middle of (though not the center of) Amish country, about 60 miles northwest of Lancaster. There were Amish students in my class; the boys stayed until 3rd grade and the girls until 5th IIRC (and, yes, they could ride the bus: many actually Amish people can use electronics and such things if 1) they don't own them, 2) it's strictly for work or education, and 3) there's no other way, I think).
Every weekend a family would come by on a horse and buggy selling homemade baked goods and vegetables.
A particular source of profit for many nearby Amish - other than farming, of course - is quilting. A real, handmade Amish quilt can sell for upwards of $2,000; I've been in the bank behind an Amish person depositing over $5,000 cash.
