Can an atheist be ethical like theists

For stater the sense of morality has been rationalized in older societies by a religious foundations and with the absence of these foundations what is forbidding people from being unethical? what is the determinant for right and wrong if not relegion ?

Ethical like someone who lies about citations and quote mines from sources to cherry pick sections that support his argument whilst ignoring those sections that destroy it? Ethical like you you mean?

Man I never meant that people are suicidal because of lack of relegion but because they lack purpose in life anyone can arrive to this point wether he is an atheist or theist but theist people seem to have something preventing them which is the fear of going to hell if they did it.

so the rest of the paragraph was irrelevant talking about happiness and stuff and I agree with it when your perfectly happy you might tend to lack purpose in life but how you act towards it is the point as for the reference I just was in a hurry and I forgot to mention it thats all.
