Bill Maher IS an ass, and a pretentious prick. He's also rib-crackingly funny at times.
But since we're all agreeing that he is a comedian and not a philosopher, maybe recognize that he is speaking in a comedian's language: exaggeration. George Carlin had a bit on that as well - atheists had "their" comedian a while before Maher got Real Time. Although I think it's ridiculous to say either of them is an "atheist's" comedian. That's like saying Lewis Black is a democrat's comedian, or a republican's. Maher's capable of making fun of people in a completely non-religious context...religion's just too rich a minefield not to detonate 1 or 2 thousand joke bombs.
