Well, I remember when Louis Theroux made his documentary, and if memory serves, they said that they gladly spent upwards of 1/5 of $1 million every year on plane fare to travel across the country for 45 minute pickets with almost everybody who comes across them finding them repugnant. I don't know where the money comes from either. For the record, in the documentary, not only did they come to my home town, but I actually drive past the space they picketed at no less than once a week.

By the way, if Addicted to Hate is an accurate source of info on Fred Phelps' past, it appears that, considering that he spent much of his life with a family as an abusive asshole, I would have to say that their rabid, Maldororian misanthropy actually is a step up.
