Indeed,as do all religious organistations.Their registered charities could remain tax exempt as long as they were subject to independent auditing. I have no problem with feeding the poor and all the other good things many religious charities do. However, I have a big problem with tax free dollars being used to build churches and religious schools and to promote their beliefs in any way.
I'm reasonably aware of LDS history, and have tried to reed their loopy book several times. It reads exactly as one would expect: The rantings of a semi literate C19th ignoramus who has read little besides the bible (hence the archaic literary style).
The absurd Laminite theory was not invented by Joe Smith, but was a not uncommon belief in the C19th. As was the view that black people were not 'really' human. The book of Mormon was first published in 1830,whilst slavery was still very much alive throughout the US. Like religious books everywhere, the Book Of Mormon reflects the values and prejudices of the writer, his culture and his times..
Want to upset a Mormon? Ask it about 'The Mountain Meadow Massacre'.
