It was something I learned in sociology class. I cannot remember the specifics, but certain needs to be met for an individual to be truly happy. Financially secure, loving family/friends. It makes sense from a sociological viewpoint.
Maybe you're talking about Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
It's definitely not a sociological thing, but you may have learnt it in sociology, as psychology is the basis of sociology.
If that is what you're talking about then you do have a point.
There are a few items on the first tier that an individual could not achieve happiness without, no matter how delusional they can be.
