As many of you know the most earthlike planet ever discovered was recently found orbiting the star Gliese 581. The name of this planet is Gliese 581g.
This planet orbits it's star at a distance of 0.146AU (The earth is 1 AU from the sun), is about 3 times the size of earth (spatially) and is believed to be of a similar composition. Since the star Gliese is much smaller and less bright that our sun the planet falls into that star's Goldilocks zone despite being nearly 10 times closer to the star, meaning it is within the temperature range suitable for a liquid ocean, amongst other things.
In 2008, Ragbir Bhathal, a member of the SETI institute and australian astronomer, picked up what appeared to be a non-random laser pulse originating outwards from the planet Gliese 581e, a planet that is of a similar distance from the newly discovered Gliese 581g as Earth is to Mars.
"Just about a year ago Ragbir Bhathal was scanning the night sky for alien activity, just as he does every night. Except on this December eve Ragbir Bhathal found a strong, regular, repeating signal. Unless the whole thing stemmed from a huge glitch occurring simultaneously in all his million-dollar lab equipment, there stands a strong chance that Ragbir found a message sent by some intelligent, alien race."

"Although Gliese 581e is too close to its host sun to support life, it's the first planet believed to be rocky like our own, a kind of super-hot Earth quite unlike the long line of gas and ice giants discovered to date.
With the launch of NASA's Kepler space telescope in March, specifically designed to detect smaller Earth-like planets, astronomers are confident that the discovery of a blue planet, orbiting in the so-called Goldilocks zone"

This was exactly the planet they were looking for, but they didn't need Keplar to find it.
The prediction that sparked investigation into that region of space and said there should be a golidlocks planet, was right... This is getting both weird and exciting.
And if that wasn't strange enough... There have been rumours this week of the UN appointing a space ambassador.
