RE: How to install APT-GET or YUM or RPM or something similar on Linpus?

I'm considering ditching Windows XP on a box intended to serve as a media processing server, primarily compressing DVD video files and/or converting them to mkv or mp4 video files. The latter is readily available in Linux. The former is reputed to be, but I have no real idea how well compared to DVD-SHRINK on Windows.
Even given that, I'd have to decide on a flavor, likely between Mint and Ubuntu. I don't really have a preference, but Ubuntu may have a stronger user community, which is important to a noobie like me. Beyond that, I don't like Linux Mint's support model, and much prefer the more traditional Ubuntu approach.
