The people haven’t been in the house long enough to establish squatters rights, so the technically, they’re not squatters, they’re simply trespassers in illegal possession of the property. I don’t see any reason why they can’t be evicted, arrested and charged.
I looked it up - in Michigan, if you occupy someone else’s property for 15 years and they don’t start legal proceedings to evict you in that time, the property is yours. The legal term is ‘adverse possession’.
