Everything we do (and I mean everything) is solely for the purpose of ensuring that this cycle goes on and on and on.
Communication is merely a part of the mating ritual, along with dancing, and becoming successful at what we do in order to attract a better mate.
So, we smoke and drink and eat too much. So what? These are necessary evils used for population control, just like war and car accidents and natural disasters.
Any attempt as stopping smokers, drinkers, and the like will only make us live longer and reach that point of over-population where it will be too late to turn back. When we reach that point we will kill and eat everything that walks, crawls, swims or flies. Then we'll turn on each other for food.
It is imperative that we live and let live so that we can live and let die sooner.
This is what life is all about, and nothing more.
Bringing forth a productive person requires a large investment of time and effort. That time and effort generally has more pay-offs if the person lives a longer, healthier life.
A person who lives longer probably could be considered better adapted, but natural selection works on the just-good-enough principle. As long as you're just-good-enough to survive and reproduce, you pass on your genes. Since harmful mutations tend to accumulate over the generations, we're all just-good-enough. We have some harmful mutations, but not so many that we spontaneously abort in the womb.
