There is an age when reason just wont work with children, particularly if the little bugger is wilfully ignoring what you say such as "don't run out into the road" or "don't hold your little brother by his ankles and dangle him over the balcony". I don't remember smacking our eldest but we have locked him in the garden when he was having a particularly violent rage, kicking shins and destroying everything, he'd smashed up all his own stuff and was starting on the rest of the house by the time I came home, my wife was in tears and black and blue.
Fortunately he's calmed now, he's over six foot and into body building so there's not much I could do if he ever kicked off again.
